Kia Sorento (2021-25) Trailer Wiring Installation Overview
Trailer wiring installation on the Kia Sorento varies depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with the factory tow package.
Sorento Models Without the Factory Tow Package
Time Commitment: Up to 1.5 additional hours to hitch installation time
On Sorento models without the factory tow package, the installation is more involved because the trailer wiring must be integrated into the vehicle’s taillight wiring system. To access the factory wiring connections, both rear taillights must be removed and the vehicle’s wiring harnesses disconnected from the taillight housings.
The trailer wiring harness is then carefully routed through the rear bumper area and behind the vehicle trim using specialized routing tools to keep the wiring hidden, protected, and properly secured. A powered converter module is mounted inside the vehicle and grounded to the vehicle chassis to help ensure reliable trailer light operation. A dedicated power wire is also routed from the vehicle’s battery to the converter module so the trailer lights are powered properly without overloading the vehicle’s factory taillight circuits.
Once the wiring is routed and secured, the system is tested using a trailer or tester before all trim panels and taillights are reinstalled.
Sorento Models Equipped With the Factory Tow Package
Time Commitment: Up to 30 minutes in addition to hitch installation time
Sorento models equipped with the factory tow package typically use a more streamlined installation process because the vehicle already includes a factory trailer wiring connection near the rear bumper area.
For these models, the installation usually involves accessing the factory connector underneath the rear of the vehicle, installing the custom wiring harness, mounting the converter module, routing the 4-flat connector to the hitch area, and reconnecting the vehicle battery if required during installation.
Even with the factory tow package, the wiring still needs to be properly secured, protected from moisture and corrosion, and tested to verify correct trailer light operation before installation is complete.
