Subaru Ascent Trailer Wiring Installation Overview

Time Commitment: Up to 45 minutes in addition to hitch installation time

Trailer wiring installation on the Subaru Ascent is typically a streamlined process because the vehicle includes a factory trailer wiring connection inside the rear cargo area. This allows the wiring harness to connect directly to the vehicle without removing the taillights or routing a separate power wire through the exterior of the vehicle.

Installation begins by opening the rear hatch and removing the rear cargo floor coverings, storage trays, and related fasteners to gain access to the driver-side rear cargo trim area. Once the trim panel is loosened, the factory trailer wiring connector can be accessed behind the rear interior paneling.

A vehicle-specific plug-and-play trailer wiring harness is then connected directly to the factory wiring connector. Because the harness uses factory-style connectors, no cutting or splicing of the factory wiring is typically required during installation.

A powered converter module is mounted inside the cargo area near the factory wiring connection to help regulate trailer lighting power and protect the vehicle’s factory electrical system. The wiring harness is also grounded to a clean metal grounding point on the vehicle body to help ensure reliable trailer light operation and long-term durability.

Once installed, the trailer wiring system is tested to verify proper operation of:

  • Running lights

  • Brake lights

  • Left and right turn signals

  • Ground circuit integrity

The 4-flat trailer connector is designed to store inside the rear cargo area when not in use, helping protect it from moisture, road debris, and corrosion. When needed, the wiring can be routed out through the rear hatch near the center of the vehicle for trailer connection.

After testing is complete, all cargo trays, floor coverings, and trim panels are carefully reinstalled and the trailer connector dust cover is installed to help protect the wiring system when not in use.
