Hitch installation on the 2018–2023 Subaru Crosstrek is a relatively straightforward frame-mounted installation that does not typically require removing the rear bumper fascia or lowering the exhaust system.
Installation begins by removing factory rubber plugs from the rear frame rails while leaving the center plugs in place. The access holes are then enlarged as needed so the hitch mounting hardware can be routed into the enclosed frame rails.
Because the Crosstrek uses enclosed frame rails, the mounting hardware is installed using specialized fishwire techniques. Carriage bolts and reinforcement spacers are carefully routed through the frame and pulled into position at the hitch mounting points. Some hardware is reverse-fishwired directly through the access holes, which allows the hitch to be secured without opening the frame rails.
The hitch is then raised into position while the fishwires are guided through the hitch mounting holes. Leveling spacers may be used as needed to help the hitch sit evenly against the frame rails and maintain proper alignment.
Once the hitch is positioned, the mounting hardware is installed and torqued to manufacturer specifications to ensure secure attachment to the vehicle frame. After installation, the hitch fitment is inspected to verify proper alignment, secure mounting, and clean overall appearance.
