Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness Hitch Installation Overview
Towing Capacity: 3500 lbs Tongue Weight: 525 lbs
Time Commitment: Typically up to 1 hour
Hitch installation on the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is a relatively streamlined installation because the hitch mounts directly to the vehicle’s factory frame rails without requiring removal of the rear bumper fascia or exhaust system.
Installation begins by accessing the factory mounting points located inside the rear frame rails. Factory rubber plugs are removed to expose the mounting locations while leaving the center frame plugs in place. Access holes in the frame rails are then enlarged as needed to allow the hitch mounting hardware to pass through the enclosed frame structure.
Because the Crosstrek Wilderness uses enclosed frame rails, specialized fishwire techniques are used to route carriage bolts and reinforcement spacers through the frame and into the correct mounting positions. These internal reinforcement spacers help distribute the load across the vehicle frame and are an important part of maintaining proper hitch strength and fitment.
The hitch is then carefully raised into position while the fishwires are guided through the hitch mounting holes. Depending on minor manufacturing tolerances, leveling spacers may also be used during installation to help ensure proper hitch alignment and fitment against the frame rails.
Once positioned, the hitch is secured using high-grade mounting hardware torqued to manufacturer specifications to ensure proper clamping force and secure attachment to the vehicle structure.
One advantage of the Crosstrek Wilderness design is that the installation can typically be completed without removing major bumper components or lowering the exhaust system, helping maintain a cleaner and more efficient installation process while still providing a strong frame-mounted hitch solution suitable for bike racks, cargo carriers, and light towing applications.
After installation is complete, the hitch fitment is inspected to verify proper alignment, secure mounting, and clean overall appearance.
