Installing a Trailer Hitch on a 2017–Current Honda CR-V

Towing Capacity: 3500 lbs Tongue Weight: 525 lb

Installing a trailer hitch on a 2017 or newer Honda CR-V is more involved than simply bolting something underneath the vehicle. To ensure proper fitment, clean appearance, and long-term durability, we follow a detailed, vehicle-specific process.

Here’s what that looks like.

1. Creating Safe Working Clearance

To properly position the hitch, we first create room underneath the rear of the CR-V.

This involves carefully lowering the exhaust by releasing the rear rubber isolators.

We also remove the necessary lower fascia fasteners to access the mounting area cleanly.

2. Routing the Mounting Hardware Inside the Frame

Unlike some older body-on-frame vehicles, the CR-V requires hardware to be guided through factory access openings and positioned inside the vehicle’s structural mounting points.

Using a wire-guiding method, we feed the supplied bolts and spacers through the internal frame channels and into their exact attachment locations.

This is one of the more technical portions of the install. Proper positioning ensures the hitch mounts securely and sits aligned.

3. Precision Trimming of the Lower Fascia

For 2017+ CR-V models, minor trimming of the lower rear fascia is required so the receiver can pass through cleanly.

We follow the manufacturer’s trim diagram and carefully measure before making any cuts.  From experience, we know the trim diagram specs aren't perfectly accurate on the CRV so the final cut may vary in size and placement a bit from the photo above.

The goal is simple:A clean, centered receiver with a factory-quality appearance.

Electrical components are located in this area, so attention to detail matters.

4. Positioning and Securing the Hitch

With hardware properly staged and trimming completed, the hitch is raised into position and secured to the vehicle’s designated mounting points.

If your specific hitch design includes an additional reinforcement plate that ties into the recovery/tow loop area, that component is installed as intended by the manufacturer.

Everything is aligned carefully before final tightening.

5. Final Securing & Reassembly

Once the hitch is properly mounted:

  • All hardware is secured according to manufacturer specifications

  • The exhaust is repositioned and reattached

  • All fascia fasteners are reinstalled

  • Any panels loosened during the process are restored

We finish by checking alignment and ensuring the receiver sits straight and centered.

Installation Time

Most Honda CR-V hitch installations are completed in approximately 1 hour at your home.

Why Professional Installation Matters on the CR-V

The 2017+ CR-V has tight rear clearances, integrated trim panels, and internal mounting channels. Proper installation helps prevent:

  • Rattles or exhaust contact

  • Crooked receiver alignment

  • Over-trimmed fascia

  • Hardware that loosens over time

Our experience installing hundreds of hitches each year means your vehicle is handled correctly the first time.
