Mazda CX-50 (2023-) Hitch Installation Overview

Towing Capacity: 3500 lbs Tongue Weight: 525 lbs

Time Commitment: Up to 1 hour

Hitch installation on the Mazda CX-50 is a relatively streamlined process compared to many modern SUVs because the vehicle is designed with a removable factory hitch access panel in the center of the rear bumper.

Installation begins by removing the factory hitch access panel and lower mounting hardware from the center of the bumper. Behind this panel is the structural bumper support area where the hitch receiver will pass through once installed.

To allow proper hitch fitment, a small section of the internal bumper support must be carefully trimmed using specialized cutting tools. This trimming is performed behind the removable access panel area and is not typically visible once installation is complete. Proper measuring and trimming are important to maintain both structural clearance and a clean factory-style appearance around the receiver opening.

Factory mounting points hidden behind protective tape on the vehicle frame rails are then exposed to allow the hitch to bolt directly to the Mazda’s factory weldnuts. The hitch is carefully raised into position and secured using high-grade mounting hardware torqued to manufacturer specifications.

Depending on the specific CX-50 trim level and factory configuration, the forward mounting positions may vary slightly. Proper alignment during installation is important to ensure correct fitment and secure attachment to the vehicle frame.

One of the advantages of the CX-50 design is that the receiver integrates cleanly through the factory access panel area, helping maintain a more factory-style appearance when viewed from the rear of the vehicle.

Once installation is complete, all hardware is rechecked, the hitch alignment is verified, and the installation area is inspected to ensure proper fitment and clean appearance.
