Mazda CX-9 Hitch Installation Overview
Towing Capacity: 4000 lbs Tongue Weight: 600 lbs
Time Commitment: Typically up to 1 hour
Hitch installation on the Mazda CX-9 requires access to the rear frame rails and temporary lowering of the rear exhaust system so the hitch can be properly positioned against the vehicle’s mounting points.
Installation begins by removing the lower rear trim panel underneath the bumper. This panel is returned to the vehicle owner because it is not reinstalled after the hitch is installed. The rear exhaust is then temporarily lowered from its rubber hangers and supported to create enough working room above the exhaust and below the rear bumper structure.
Because the CX-9 uses enclosed frame rails, the hitch hardware must be routed into position using specialized fishwire techniques. Carriage bolts and spacer blocks are carefully guided through access holes in the frame rails and pulled into the correct mounting locations before the hitch is raised into place.
The hitch is then lifted into position while the fishwires are guided through the hitch mounting holes. Once aligned, the mounting hardware is secured and torqued to manufacturer specifications. The exhaust system is then raised back into position and reinstalled on its rubber hangers.
After installation, the hitch fitment is inspected to verify proper alignment, secure mounting, exhaust clearance, and clean finished appearance.
