Hitch installation on the Mazda CX-90 requires partial disassembly of the lower rear bumper area in order to safely mount the hitch to the vehicle’s factory frame mounting points while maintaining proper bumper support and appearance.

Installation begins by removing multiple factory push fasteners, trim clips, and the removable rear hitch access panel located underneath the bumper. Portions of the lower bumper support structure must also be temporarily removed to gain access to the vehicle’s factory mounting locations.

Once the lower bumper area is opened, factory mounting points hidden behind protective adhesive coverings are exposed on the frame rails. The hitch is then carefully raised into position behind the bumper while working around factory wiring, sensors, and bumper components.

Because the Mazda CX-90 uses tight tolerances between the bumper structure and hitch mounting locations, proper hitch alignment is critical during installation. The hitch side plates must be measured and aligned within a very specific range before final installation to ensure proper fitment and to prevent unnecessary stress on the mounting points or bumper structure.

After the hitch is positioned, high-grade hardware is installed and torqued to manufacturer specifications to properly secure the hitch to the vehicle frame. Any bumper support brackets and lower bumper support components removed during installation are then carefully reinstalled to maintain factory bumper support and fitment.

One advantage of the CX-90 design is that the installation typically retains the factory removable hitch access panel, allowing the receiver opening to remain more discreet when the hitch is not in use.

Once installation is complete, all trim panels, fasteners, and bumper supports are reinstalled and the hitch fitment is inspected to verify proper alignment, secure mounting, and clean appearance.
