Exposed hitch installation on the Subaru Forester is typically less involved than the hidden hitch option because the rear bumper fascia and taillights do not need to be removed. Instead, the hitch mounts underneath the vehicle directly to the frame rails.
Installation begins by temporarily lowering the rear exhaust system from its rubber hangers and supporting it to create enough room to access the frame mounting locations. Depending on whether the vehicle has a single or dual exhaust setup, one or both sides of the exhaust may need to be lowered.
The rear heat shield and driver-side underbody panel are then removed or adjusted to expose the frame rails. Factory hole plugs are removed from the frame, and the center access holes are enlarged so the hitch mounting hardware can be routed into position.
Because the Forester uses enclosed frame rails, the hitch hardware is installed using specialized fishwire techniques. Carriage bolts and spacer blocks are carefully routed through the frame and pulled into the proper mounting locations before the hitch is lifted into place.
The hitch is then raised into position beneath the vehicle and secured to the frame using high-grade mounting hardware torqued to manufacturer specifications. Any heat shield or underbody panel components removed during installation are reinstalled or adjusted as needed, and the exhaust system is returned to its factory hangers.
Compared with the hidden hitch option, the exposed hitch is usually faster and more economical to install, but more of the hitch structure remains visible below the rear bumper. Once complete, the hitch is inspected for proper alignment, secure mounting, exhaust clearance, and clean fitment.
