Subaru Forester Hidden Hitch Installation Overview
Towing Capacity: 3500 lbs Tongue Weight: 350 lbs
Time Commitment: Typically up to 1.5 hours
Hidden hitch installation on the Subaru Forester is a more involved process than many standard hitch installations because the rear bumper fascia and factory bumper beam must be removed in order to mount the hitch behind the rear bumper structure for a cleaner, more factory-style appearance.
Installation begins by accessing the rear cargo area and removing interior trim covers to gain access to the taillight mounting hardware. Both taillights are then carefully removed so the rear bumper fascia can be detached without damaging the surrounding trim or alignment tabs.
Once the taillights are removed, multiple plastic rivets and fasteners securing the rear bumper fascia are removed from underneath the vehicle, inside the wheel wells, and around the rear hatch area. The rear bumper fascia is then carefully separated from the vehicle while disconnecting any factory rear parking sensor wiring or rear bumper electronics equipped on the vehicle.
With the bumper fascia removed, the factory rear bumper beam is unbolted from the frame rails and removed from the vehicle. The hidden hitch is then positioned behind the bumper structure and secured directly to the Forester’s factory mounting locations using high-grade mounting hardware torqued to manufacturer specifications.
Because the hitch installs behind the rear bumper fascia rather than below it, this style of installation allows for a cleaner and more integrated appearance compared to many traditional receiver hitches. On most Forester hidden hitch installations, the receiver opening is designed to sit higher and more discreetly underneath the bumper.
Once the hitch is secured, the bumper fascia, taillights, parking sensor wiring, trim panels, and all factory fasteners are carefully reinstalled. Final fitment is then inspected to verify proper bumper alignment, secure mounting, sensor operation, and clean overall appearance.
