Subaru Forester Trailer Wiring Installation Overview
Time Commitment: Typically up to 30 minutes in addition to hitch installation time
Trailer wiring installation on the Subaru Forester is usually a streamlined process because the vehicle includes a factory trailer wiring connection inside the rear cargo area. This allows the wiring harness to connect directly to the vehicle without removing the taillights or routing a separate power wire from the front battery.
Installation begins by opening the rear hatch and removing the cargo floor coverings, storage trays, and related fasteners in the rear cargo area. Once the trim is removed, the factory trailer wiring connector can be accessed behind the rear cargo trim on the driver side.
A vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness is then connected directly to the factory plug. The converter module is mounted inside the vehicle in a protected location near the taillight area, and the wiring harness is grounded to a clean, secure grounding point on the vehicle body.
Because the Forester uses a factory rear cargo area connection, the installation is cleaner and less invasive than wiring systems that require accessing both taillights or routing a dedicated power wire underneath the vehicle. The 4-flat trailer connector is stored inside the rear cargo area when not in use, helping protect it from moisture, road debris, and corrosion.
Once installed, the system is tested to verify proper operation of the running lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals, and ground circuit. All cargo trays, floor coverings, and trim pieces are then reinstalled, and the 4-flat dust cover is installed to help protect the connector when stored.
