Toyota Grand Highlander Trailer Wiring Installation Overview

Time Commitment: Typically up to 45 minutes in addition to hitch installation time

Trailer wiring installation on the Toyota Grand Highlander requires accessing both an interior factory wiring connection near the third-row seating area and an exterior connection near the rear bumper.

Installation begins inside the vehicle by folding the second-row seat forward and removing the third-row cup holder and nearby trim components on the driver side. This provides access to the factory wiring connector located behind the rear interior paneling.

A vehicle-specific wiring harness is then connected to the factory connector inside the vehicle. The converter module is mounted behind the interior trim, and the harness is grounded to an existing factory grounding point near the rear seat belt area. This helps the trailer lighting system operate properly while protecting the vehicle’s factory electrical system.

A second harness connection is made underneath the rear of the vehicle near the bumper, where the exterior 4-flat trailer connector plugs into the factory rear jumper connection. The 4-flat is then routed toward the center of the vehicle near the hitch and secured in place for trailer use.

Once installed, the trailer wiring system is tested to verify proper operation of:

  • Running lights

  • Brake lights

  • Left and right turn signals

  • Ground circuit integrity

After testing is complete, all interior trim panels, cup holder components, and fasteners are carefully reinstalled. The finished setup provides a clean, vehicle-specific 4-flat trailer wiring connection routed near the hitch for convenient trailer hookup.
