Toyota Grand Highlander Hitch Installation Overview
Towing Capacity: 5000 lbs Tongue Weight: 500 lbs
Time Commitment: Up to 45 minutes
Hitch installation on the Toyota Grand Highlander is a relatively straightforward installation because the vehicle includes factory weldnuts already built into the frame rails for hitch mounting.
Installation begins by removing protective plastic plugs from the outer sides of the rear frame rails to expose the factory mounting locations. These plugs are returned to the vehicle owner after installation.
Once the mounting points are exposed, the hitch is raised into position and aligned with the factory weldnuts located on the sides of the vehicle frame rails. Because the hitch bolts attach horizontally into the sides of the frame rather than vertically from underneath, this installation typically requires two people to safely hold and align the hitch while the hardware is started.
The hitch is then secured using high-grade mounting hardware and conical-toothed washers designed to maintain proper clamping force against the vehicle frame. All hardware is torqued to manufacturer specifications to ensure secure attachment and long-term durability.
One advantage of the Grand Highlander design is that the installation can usually be completed without lowering the exhaust system, fishwiring hardware through the frame rails, or removing the rear bumper fascia. This helps maintain a more efficient installation process while still providing a strong frame-mounted hitch solution suitable for bike racks, cargo carriers, and towing applications.
After installation is complete, the hitch fitment is inspected to verify proper alignment, secure mounting, and clean overall appearance.
