Rav4 2019- Present Hitch Installation Overview
The Toyota RAV4 uses factory weld-nut mounting points built directly into the frame rails, allowing for a clean, structural hitch installation.
On paper, the instructions appear simple. In reality, this installation is more challenging than it looks — particularly due to tight frame access and working clearances.
Here’s what the professional installation process involves.
1. Preparing the Factory Mounting Points
Toyota protects the rear frame weld-nuts with adhesive coverings to prevent corrosion. We begin by removing these coverings to expose the threaded attachment points.
Clean, unobstructed threads ensure proper hardware engagement and long-term durability.

2. Passenger-Side Clearance & Tie-Down Removal
Some RAV4 models are equipped with a factory tie-down bracket on the passenger-side frame rail. When present, this bracket must be removed to allow the hitch to sit flush against the frame. It is returned to you after removal.
This side of the vehicle is also where the installation becomes deceptively challenging.
Frame clearance on the passenger side is extremely tight — there is barely enough room for both the mounting bolt and a hand at the same time. Maneuvering hardware into position requires patience, controlled positioning, and experience working in confined spaces.
In some cases, slightly lowering the exhaust can improve access.
3. Hitch Positioning & Hardware Installation
The hitch is raised into position and aligned with the factory weld-nuts.
All supplied M12 bolts and conical-toothed washers are installed loosely first. This allows for proper alignment before final tightening and ensures the hitch seats evenly against both frame rails.
Because of the tight working space on the passenger side, careful alignment is critical. Forcing hardware or misaligning the hitch can damage threads or create uneven loading.

4. Precision Torque & Clearance Verification
Once properly aligned, all mounting hardware is torqued to manufacturer specifications.

No contact with heat shields

No interference points that could create vibration or rattling
If minor heat shield adjustment is needed, it is carefully repositioned to maintain proper clearance and eliminate noise.
