Telluride (2023- Present Flat 4 Wiring Installation Overview
Installing trailer wiring on a Kia Telluride requires accessing the vehicle’s rear lighting system so that the trailer’s lights can safely mirror the vehicle’s turn signals, brake lights, and running lights.
The process begins in the engine compartment, where the battery is temporarily disconnected so we can safely work with the vehicle’s electrical system.
Next, both rear taillights are removed to access the factory lighting connections inside the taillight cavities. From beneath the rear bumper, wiring is carefully routed into these cavities using a fish-wire technique that allows the harness to pass through existing body openings without drilling large holes in the vehicle.
Tellurides are slightly more complex than many vehicles because Kia produced multiple taillight configurations that require careful integration with the vehicle’s lighting system. For this reason, we use a powered wiring system that reliably works with all Telluride variants while protecting the vehicle’s electronics.
Once the wiring is in place, it is connected to the Telluride’s lighting system so the trailer can receive signals for left turn, right turn, brake lights, and running lights. The harness is then routed behind the bumper and secured out of sight along the rear of the vehicle.
A powered module is installed and grounded to the vehicle frame. This module protects the Telluride’s sensitive electronics by isolating the trailer lighting system from the vehicle’s computer-controlled circuits. Finally, the wiring is routed to the hitch location, a hitch tube cover with a built in wiring bracket is installed, and the harness is fully tested to confirm proper operation before the taillights and interior panels are reinstalled.
Because accessing the taillight area requires partial disassembly of the rear of the vehicle, trailer wiring is typically installed at the same time as the hitch to avoid repeating much of the same work later.
