BMW X5 Stealth Hitch Installation Overview
Towing Capacity: 8000 lbs (with wiring) Tongue Weight: 800 lbs
The BMW X5 is a popular vehicle for bike racks, cargo carriers, and light towing. A Stealth Hitch is designed specifically for vehicles like the X5 where owners want towing capability without permanently changing the appearance of the vehicle.
Unlike traditional trailer hitches that remain visible under the bumper, the Stealth Hitch system uses a removable receiver. When the receiver is removed, the hitch is completely hidden behind the bumper so the vehicle maintains its factory appearance.
Installing this hitch requires partial removal of the rear interior panels and bumper assembly so the hitch frame can be mounted to the vehicle’s factory structural mounting points. This is a challenging installation that typically takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Removable Receiver System
One of the main advantages of the Stealth Hitch system is the detachable receiver design.
Instead of a permanently exposed hitch receiver, the BMW X5 uses a removable accessory that locks into the hidden latch block behind the bumper.
When you need to tow or mount a bike rack:
-
Insert the receiver into the latch block
-
Rotate the locking handle until it engages
-
Secure it with the built-in locking pin and key
When you're finished using the hitch, the receiver can be removed so the hitch remains completely hidden.
This design is especially popular with luxury vehicles like the BMW X5 because it preserves the vehicle’s clean rear appearance.
What Happens During Installation
Installing a Stealth Hitch on the BMW X5 is a fairly involved process because the hitch frame mounts behind the rear bumper beam. Accessing that area requires removing several interior trim panels and temporarily removing the rear bumper cover.

The installation typically begins inside the cargo area. Interior access panels and the rear cargo floor are removed to expose the mounting areas behind the vehicle’s rear structure. Some trim pieces and interior side panels must also be removed to access the hardware that secures the rear lighting assemblies and bumper.
Next, the rear taillights are carefully removed so the bumper cover can be detached. This allows access to the mounting hardware that holds the rear bumper fascia in place.
Underneath the vehicle, numerous screws and clips are removed from the lower bumper panels. The bumper cover is then carefully unclipped from the body and pulled rearward. Because the bumper contains sensors and wiring, the electrical connectors must be unplugged before the bumper can be completely removed.

Once the bumper cover is off, the factory reinforcement beam is removed from the rear frame of the vehicle. This beam is replaced by the Stealth Hitch frame, which mounts directly to the same factory mounting points used by the original beam.
The hitch frame is then positioned, centered, and secured using the factory hardware. This ensures the hitch is mounted exactly where BMW designed the structural mounting points.
After the hitch frame is installed, the removable latch block is mounted. This is the part that allows accessories like a receiver or ball mount to lock into place when needed.
Finally, the bumper cover, taillights, and all interior panels are carefully reinstalled so the vehicle
