If your CR-V has the factory tow prep connector, this harness installs cleanly — no splicing required. That said, Honda did not make access simple. This is an interior trim removal job, not a five-minute plug-in.
Here’s how it’s done properly.
Step 1: Clear the Cargo Area
Open the tailgate and remove all floor coverings and cargo trays.
Remove the fasteners securing the rear scuff panel (the plastic trim at the hatch opening).Pull outward at the bottom first, then lift up to release it.
⚠️ Take care not to damage the alignment tabs — they’re easy to bend.
Step 2: Remove Rear Seat Floor Hardware
Fold both rear seats down.
Locate and remove:
The two cargo tie-downs on the rear seat floor panel
The screw hidden under the cargo tie-down cover
This allows access to the lower interior trim panels.
Step 3: Remove Rear Storage Trim Panel
Behind the rear seats, pull upward on the storage trim panel to release it.
This panel is clip-secured — steady pressure works better than force.
Step 4: Remove Center Ceiling Trim Panel
Pull straight down on the center ceiling trim panel.
⚠️ Again — alignment tabs can crack if twisted. Pull straight down.
Step 5: Remove Rear Scuff Panel (If Not Already Removed)
If still installed, remove the rear scuff panel using the same method:Pull outward at the bottom, then lift up.
Step 6: Access the Side Trim Panels
Remove:
The small cover behind the rear seat fold-down lever
The two screws securing the side trim panel
Gently pull outward on the interior side panels.
Behind this panel, you’ll locate the factory trailer connector.
Step 7: Locate the Taillight Wiring Connector
Behind the upper side trim panel, locate the vehicle’s taillight wiring connector.
The connector:
Will be secured to the factory harness
Will match the plug on your custom wiring harness
Once located, simply plug the new harness inline.
What This Means in the Real World
This isn’t technically difficult — but it is time consuming. The majority of the labor is careful interior disassembly and reassembly.
The upside:
No cutting
No splicing
No risk to sensitive CR-V electronics
Clean, factory-style integration
